Exam nod for Seth college students

May 25: The Supreme Court today asked the state government and the authorities of a derecognised Haldia medical college controlled by CPM leader Lakshman Seth to allow first-year MBBS students to appear for their exams.

The vacation bench of Justices Deepak Verma and Sudhansu Jyoti Mukhopadhaya passed the interim order on a plea by some of the students.

?We have been informed that the examination for the first-year MBBS course is going to commence from June 25, 2012. It has also been submitted that in case the petitioners are not allowed to appear for the examination, their whole year is likely to be wasted,? the apex court said.

?Looking at the facts and features of the case, we grant permission to the petitioners to appear in the aforesaid examination, subject to their depositing the requisite fees and completion of requisite attendance,? the bench said.

?They will be allowed to appear in the examination but their results will not be declared and (will) be kept in sealed covers,? it added.

The court directed the ICARE Institute of Medical Sciences and Research, which is run by a Seth-headed NGO, to accept the students? forms and exam fees and issue admit cards at the earliest.

In December, the Medical Council of India (MCI) had scrapped the recognition of the private college. The state government had in November cancelled the college?s essentiality certificate, mandatory for an MCI recognition.

Earlier, the MCI and the Dental Council of India had issued notices to ICARE after it was revealed during an inspection that the institute was sharing space with a dental college.

Sougata Saha, one of the petitioners, said the last date to register for the exams with the University of Health Sciences was May 18.

The students had moved the Supreme Court after two benches of Calcutta High Court rejected their plea that the MCI order be stayed.
